I spent longer than I should have with this one on the stand. Even in a week where every brand is competing for your five minutes, there are still a handful of watches that make you quietly ignore the schedule, and the new SBGZ011 Mystic Waterfall was one of them. The Micro Artist Studio, if you haven’t come across it before, is Grand Seiko’s small haute horlogerie cell at the Shiojiri facility in Nagano, set up in 2000 and dedicated to the Masterpiece Collection. A handful of master watchmakers designing, building and hand-finishing Spring Drive movements and their cases from start to finish, and producing the sort of work that usually only emerges from Geneva or the Vallée de Joux. The SBGZ011 is their Watches & Wonders 2026 release.
The inspiration is the Tateshina Otaki waterfall in the Tateshina-Genseirin Primeval Forest, not far from the Shinshu Watch Studio where the artisans work. Both the silver dial and the 950 platinum case are hand-engraved with a multidirectional flow of lines meant to evoke spring water bubbling up from the earth, running continuously from the centre of the dial, out across the bezel and down over the lugs, with no visible seam between the two. The resulting texture is organic, fluid, and shifts with the light in a way that photographs genuinely struggle with. What sets it apart from the engraved pieces I’ve looked at previously is the density and control – the lines are tighter, the composition looser and more confident, and the transitions between directions are handled in a way that only properly practised hands can pull off. I would very happily take the platinum shavings home in a jar.
The case itself is the 44GS shape from 1967 – the watch that set out Grand Seiko’s so-called “Grammar of Design” – at 40mm across and 9.6mm thick, the same slim profile as the original. The 14ct white gold hour and minute hands sit over diamond-cut white gold markers applied by hand, with the tips of the minute and seconds hands bent by hand too. Flip it over and the manual-wind Calibre 9R02A1 sits beneath a sapphire caseback, Grand Seiko’s thinnest Spring Drive movement and one of only two calibres exclusive to the Micro Artist Studio. You only see one barrel through the glass, but inside that barrel sit two mainsprings stacked in parallel – combined with the Torque Return System, which captures torque that would otherwise be wasted at the top of the wind, it’s good for 84 hours of power reserve at ±1 second per day. The finishing is on par with what you’d expect from the top end of the independent scene, sharp interior angles included – and there’s a customisable 18ct yellow gold plaque alongside the Micro Artist signature, which makes clear this is as much a commission as a production watch.
The SBGZ011 comes with a glazed black crocodile strap and a Kyoto Leather second strap crafted from Japanese Wagyu hide using traditional foil-stamping techniques – a nice touch that extends the craftsmanship theme beyond the watch itself. At £74,500 it sits firmly in Masterpiece Collection territory, with the 50-piece run available exclusively at Grand Seiko Boutiques from July.
