He might be seen more commonly munching on deer liver (The Revenant) and popping pills (The Wolf of Wall Street), but we still remember a fresh-faced Leo drowning as Titanic sank (there was definitely room for two on that raft, Rose) and ‘finding himself’ in Thailand courtesy of The Beach. He’s grown a hell of a lot in that time, as has his watch collection – both on screen and off.
In The Great Gatsby Leo can be spied wearing an era-appropriate Art Deco-style timepiece (although its real identity is about as clear as the titular character), while in Blood Diamond it’s a chunky Breitling Chrono Avenger on his wrist.
In The Wolf of Wall Street, though, he really upped his horological game, courtesy of some gold Rolex Daytonas and Submariners, and the occasional IWC. The closest film watch to home, though, is from Leo’s role in Christopher Nolan’s time-bending Inception. Here he’s sporting a TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic, a brand the actor is a staunch ambassador for. In fact, of all the watches he could have chosen, it was a TAG that he wore on the red carpet for the aforementioned Wolfish story of excess: a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Automatic Chronograph with white dial, to be exact.
TAG Heuer is always ready to take things a step further, too, getting their ambassadors to weigh in on the actual design process. For Leo that led to the Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Automatic Chronograph, complete with a classic blue dial and the actor’s signature on the back. Being relatively well-known in collectors’ circles, you can be sure that Leo’s managed to take a fair few of these watches home with him – his collection apparently includes all of the brands mentioned here.
For now he seems pretty loyal to TAG – still, now that he can finally add the prefix ‘Oscar-winning’ to his name, perhaps he’ll start showing off a few more gold pieces to match his award. After all, when you’ve got used to downing Quaaludes in a Lamborghini, you kind of need to up your game from TAG Heuer.
