Chanel Monsieur Édition Noire Black Ceramic Watch

Chanel Monsieur Édition Noire Black Ceramic Watch

In 2016, Chanel launched their first serious men’s watch and knocked it not just out of the park but the damn city too. Perfectly-balanced, a lovely mix of classical shapes and more contemporary design notes, it was pretty darn close to flawless. Now, however, Chanel has once again proved by black is always the new black.

It’s a pretty simple change: rather than gold with a silver dial, the whole watch has been draped in blackness. The 42mm case remains as elegant as ever but now in hardwearing ceramic. The dial too is just as dark; indeed, the only alleviation is the silver numerals and box around the oversized date window.

Mechanically, it shows off why Chanel is one of the few fashion houses that watch lovers can’t help but admire. The Calibre 1 manual-winding movement incorporates the two complications that define the Monsieur’s dial layout, namely an instant jumping hour hand and a 240-degree retrograde minute indicator.

It’s a good, solid movement, slotting nicely between the J12’s simple automatic calibre and the intense flying tourbillons at the deep end of Chanel’s horological pool. The new all-black look is much the same. It’s not as technical as their ceramic diving watches, nor as classical as precious versions of the Monsieur.

The bottom line is that the Edition Noire, while a simple change of colour, is possibly one of the coolest timepieces Chanel has yet built. It’s definitely the coolest men’s watch. This is just a taste of what we’re expecting come Baselworld in March, but it already has us hungry for more.
