Certina Update DS Action Diver 38 with Improved Shock Resistance

Certins DS Action Diver 38

Back in May Certina released the DS Action Diver 40.5, which introduced the new DS (Double Security) Concept Extreme Shock Resistance system giving the watch a shock resistance of 10,000G. Following the success of that collection from the spring, Certina are now bringing the shock resistance system to more of their watches, starting with the redesigned DS Action Diver 38. Now available in five new variants.

Let’s start with a brief overview of the DS (Double Security) Concept Extreme Shock Resistance that now features in the DS Action Diver 38. It consists of a new method of screwing the movement into the case by means of a thin, ring-shaped nut to better secure it and protect it from vibrations. There’s then a new metal plate between the dial and the movement, connecting the two and absorbing shocks between them. The sapphire crystal has also been redesigned to better distribute and diffuse energy thanks to a new, slightly domed shape.

Structurally it does affect the watch a bit compared to the existing 38mm models in the range. Most notably the thickness has increased from 12.2mm to 13.22mm, which is not an insubstantial change. The diameter though is the same at the titular 38mm. Overall I don’t think the change in size will be hugely impactful as this is a dive watch anyway, which is an archetype known for its chunkier proportions. Plus, that 10,000G shock resistance makes it way more practical as a tool.

As for the new variations, the options are: steel with black dial, steel with green dial, bi-colour PVD with blue dial, black PVD with black dial, titanium with black dial. Of the five I like the restrained class of the standard black model, though the light weight of the titanium has its allure too.

Inside all five is the Powermatic 80 movement. It’s a stalwart of the Swatch group and finds itself perfectly at home here with its excellent power reserve of 80-hours and accessible price point. Speaking of which, the updated DS Action Diver 38 is priced at £765 – £840 depending on the edition. Not an earthshattering new release but an appreciated quality of life update to one of Certina’s core models.
