Bulgari Explore Contrasting Styles with Four Octo Roma Tourbillon Watches

Bulgari Octo Roma Striking Papillon Tourbillon 103748 and 103914

For 2023 Bulgari are revitalising the Octo Roma collection, their signature octagonal watch with a round bezel. It’s the more elegant cousin to the Octo Finissimo, which has a squarer case design giving it a bolder, sports luxe adjacent aesthetic. Alongside a relatively simple relaunch of the core collection, Bulgari have gone all out of four haute horology editions, the Octo Roma Tourbillon Watches, two of which have futuristic, sci-fi aesthetics while the other two embrace natural elements.

Bulgari Octo Roma Striking Papillon Tourbillon

Bulgari’s Papillon Tourbillon is one of their most visually striking watches, featuring as it does an unusual display with a central tourbillon and twin minute hands. The display functions by having the hours read via a window at 12 o’clock while the twin minute hands (known as butterfly hands, hence the name Papillon) rotate around the face of the watch once every two hours. As the hands are located 180° apart from each other, only one of them is ever pointing at the semi-circular minute track that occupies the lower portion of the display.

This new edition features a 44mm titanium case with a black DLC coating, which contrasts fantastically with the incredibly vibrant green accents. It looks like a newly discovered piece of alien technology. Although it’s very much a piece of human technology, powered by the Calibre BVL 332 with 60-hour power reserve.

Bulgari Octo Roma Striking Tourbillon Sapphire

Bulgari Octo Roma Striking Tourbillon Sapphire 103914

The Octo Roma Striking Tourbillon Sapphire (sometimes known as the Saphir) has the same case and colourway as the Papillon but features a totally different display and movement. It’s fully skeletonised with the movement appearing to float in the void of the dial, supported by the sapphire crystal, caseback and middle. The neon green hour markers radiate out from the centre like the legs of a mechanical spider or energy sources in a futuristic generator.

Similar to the Papillon above, the case is made from black DLC coated titanium with a diameter of 44mm. The skeletonised display emphasises the shape of the Octo Roma as the empty space of the dial highlights the contrasting round and octagon design. The movement here is the BVL 206 with central hours and minutes and a tourbillon at 6 o’clock. It has a slightly higher power reserve than its butterfly counterpart at a 64-hour reserve.

Bulgari Octo Roma Precious Naturalia

Bulgari Octo Roma Precious Naturalia

Totally flipping the aesthetic script is the Octo Roma Precious Naturalia, which as the name suggests is dedicated to all things precious in the natural world. A brushed rose gold case adds a sense of elegance to the piece and the dial is made from tiger’s eye, a semi-precious stone. It makes for a rich, dark backdrop for the skeletonised movement.

On a mechanical level, it bears a lot in common with the Striking Tourbillon Sapphire, housing the same BVL 206 movement housed in a 44mm case. The combination of the haute horology movement and the natural materials provides an interesting visual juxtaposition.

Bulgari Octo Roma Tourbillon Lumieré

Bulgari Octo Roma Tourbillon Lumieré

The Octo Roma Tourbillon Lumieré is the only overtly feminine one out of the four new tourbillons. It’s markedly smaller at a 38mm diameter and it’s set with 267 brilliant-cut diamonds across the round bezel, lugs, crown and skeletonised display. Where the Precious Naturalia has a weight to it with its stone dial, the Lumieré is light and airy.

Housed inside its rose gold case is the calibre BVL 208, which has a 64-hour power reserve like the BVL 206 found in the larger models. Although, as mentioned, it also has those integrated gemstone elements across the skeletonised areas.
