Brew Watch Co. Metric Gold Gives a Luxe Makeover to Their Coffee Chronograph

Brew Watches Metric GoldLooking around the Oracle Time office, I can’t help but think to myself that some of my colleagues would benefit from owning a Brew Watch Co. timepiece. I’m not going to name any names but let’s just say that some of them haven’t mastered the art of brewing a good coffee and that’s what Brew Watches are all about – timing the perfect brew and the perfect coffee break. Now, Brew Watch Co. have launched a prestige version of their 2021 Metric watch, the aptly named Metric Gold.

Structurally, it’s almost identical to the previous Metric models, which means it has a 36mm case with a cushion shaped bezel, giving the watch a retro appeal. The crown and pushers have also been styled so that they wouldn’t look out of place on an espresso machine. However, while the overall design is the same, the Metric Gold looks very different because there’s now gold plating across the case, bezel, and bracelet. It gives the watch a refined air – like a fine Arabic blend compared to a spoonful of instant coffee from your local corner shop.

The dial has also received a golden update with the hands, hour markers and chronograph subdials reimagined in gold. It contrasts beautifully against the understated black face of the watch. There have also been a few tweaks to the display.

The minute scale has been moved off the flange and now overlaps the hour markers and in its place Arabic numerals denoting five minute segments have been added. Additionally, in order to maintain the overall cleaner design of the dial, the two-tone colouration of the minute scale that previously indicated the optimal brewing time for an espresso has been removed.

Brew Metric Gold

Beneath the surface is the VK86 Meca-quartz Chronograph movement from Seiko, the same movement as used in the previous Metrics. While it’s not as prestigious as a fully mechanical chronograph, it does provide plenty of reliability and allows the Metric Gold to have an accessible price despite the gold plating.

Specifically, it’s priced at £425 excluding VAT. This is a bright and fun watch with an element of luxe design that isn’t all that common from microbrands. Perhaps Brew Watch Co. are looking to expand beyond their niche, which would be an exciting adventure.
