Brellum Debut GMT Version of Sporty Wyvern Chronometer

Brellum Wyvern GMT Chronometer

It goes without saying that as a self-professed enjoyer of fantasy literature, the name of the new Brellum Wyvern GMT Chronometer alone is enough to get me excited – a wyvern being a mythological cousin to dragons and the brand name Brellum being associated with the Latin word for glorious warfare. However, reining in my inner Tolkien, the question remains how do all these high concepts translate to watchmaking?

If you were to rename this watch according to regular naming conventions, all you would have to do is swap ‘Wyvern’ for ‘Sport’. The 42mm diameter stainless steel case is very robust and sleek with a height of just 10.9mm. But that sportiness isn’t just a stylistic affectation as it also has 100m water resistance, which is an improvement over the 50m of Brellum’s other designs like the DuoBox Classic.

However, the sporty Wyvern design isn’t all that new as it’s been used on a couple of limited editions. What is new for Brellum is the inclusion of a GMT function, which is found on a central dial ring between the hand stack and circumferential hour and minute scale. The dial, which comes in blue, silver or black, is suitably sleek, with sun ray finishing and raised diamond cut hour markers that give a multi-level effect. Those hour markers are joined by Arabic numerals at 12, 6 and 9 and a recessed date window at 3.

Brellum Wyvern GMT Chronometer

At the heart of the Wyvern (still enjoying the name) is the Brellum BR-893-GMT movement, a COSC certified chronometer based on the calibre ETA 2893/2. It has a perfectly reasonable 42-hour power reserve and is adorned with a whole host of finishes that spice up its look through the exhibition sapphire caseback.

Rounding everything out is the choice of dynamic rubber strap or steel bracelet. Both are fine but personal preference weighs in favour of the bracelet in this case, although if it was integrated that would be even better, giving it even more of a sports luxe feel. That being said, at £1,790 it’s far more accessible than any of the sporty giants like the Nautilus and Royal Oak.
