Baltic Introduce Classically Styled MR01 Micro-Rotor

Baltic MR01 Blue

Baltic are one of those brands that will likely outgrow the title of microbrand in the next year or two because frankly they’re already in the big leagues. They even provided a 1-of-1 special edition for this year’s Only Watch auction, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Audemars Piguet and Tudor. And with that special edition and now the new Baltic MR01 Micro-Rotor, they are showing some love to the other watches in their collection beyond their flagship retro diver, the Aquascaphe, to become an increasingly diverse brand.

The concept behind the Micro-rotor MR01 is that it’s classic. Which is something that comes across in the dimensions of the stainless steel case with its diameter of 36mm. The design of the case itself is very restrained and matches the smoothness of the high-domed hesalite crystal.

However, where the MR01 excels is the dial, which is very characterful. The central portion has a grainy finish, providing a welcome injection of texture to the piece. Then, around the periphery is a classically styled railroad minute track. But the highlight is the off-centre small seconds and the distinctive Arabic numerals. There are three colours available: salmon, silver and blue, all equally interesting.

Now, the only downside of the Micro-rotor MR01 is the movement because it’s Chinese. However, if you can overlook that fact for a moment, it’s a nice calibre on paper. The Hangzhou CAL5000A is an automatic movement with a power reserve of 42-hours with a micro-rotor, visible through the open caseback. Micro-rotors are increasingly popular at the moment and they aren’t very common at this price point so you can see Baltic’s logic.

Speaking of which, an individual MR01 is £460. Alternatively, there is a limited edition collectors set that includes all three dial colours plus the three different coloured leather straps that they can come on for £1,381. They’re handsome watches and well worth considering if you’re looking for classic style at an accessible price.
