Auction Watch (Jan 2020): This Month’s Bids and Pieces

Sotheby’s Erotic Online Auction, 11-20 February

Muses of the Guadalquivir Painting

Looking for something a little racy heading into Valentine’s Day? The second instalment of the Sotheby’s exhibition of the finest in artistic erotica builds on the initial offering three years ago, to highlight a huge range of paintings, photographs and drawings from around the world. Ranging from classical styles to far more contemporary works, it’s certainly going to get some bidders hot under the collar. Don’t worry too much though; seeing as it’s an online only auction, nobody will know your dirty artistic secret.

Fellows Watch Sale, 10 February

Fellows Watch Sale

Fellows might not have the headline pieces that some of the other big auctioneers fawn over, but if you’re looking for a solid watch at a good price, they have one of the best selections of pieces available. You’ll find a number of accessible Rolexes, Cartiers and even a Patek or two well under the £5k mark, as well as a particularly handsome and well-preserved Tudor Prince. That last might well be one of the better investment pieces around at the moment. The top end however is the province of Hublot, a relatively unusual top end at auction, but well worth the lower estimate of £12k for the gold alone. Looking for an entry level but recognisable watch? This is the place to look.

RM Sotheby’s Paris Auction, 5th February

Jaguar D-Type

Jaguar D-Type (Est. €5,900,000 – €6,400,000)

Set during the world-famous Rétromobile, first European Sotheby’s sale is kicking things off in Parisian fashion. The week-long classic car event is quite possibly the chicest automotive event on the calendar and the cars on offer reflect that nicely. The star lot is an original Jaguar D-Type in flawless condition, though don’t expect it to go cheap; it has a starting estimate of EUR 5,900,000.

Ferrari Daytona

1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta by Scaglietti (Est. €450,000 – €550,000)

Not much lower is a rare Lamborghini Veneno Roadster for EUR 4,500,000. A little more accessible is the stunning 1970 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetti by Scaglieti. At EUR 450,000, if that doesn’t get you bidding, nothing will.
