Artisans de Genève’s Solid Gold Skeleton Rolex Daytona Captures Autumnal Nostalgia

Artisans de Genève 'The Maggiore Challenge' (Base: Rolex ® 116505)

Artisans de Genève is an independent company specialized in the personalization of timepieces. Artisans de Genève is not affiliated with Rolex SA nor authorized by them to intervene on their products for any reason whatsoever. This personalization was ordered for his private use by a customer who owns a Rolex® timepiece.

Artisans de Genève’s bespoke Rolex customisations are some of the coolest in the personalisation game, exquisitely wrought and subtle enough not to outrage the diehard purists. Lately, they’ve been exploring colours with projects like The Shades of Blue and now their latest timepiece, called Maggiore, basks in gorgeous autumnal tones.

Anyone familiar with the Swiss-Italian border will know how serene and beautiful Lake Maggiore is, the inspiration behind Artisans de Genève’s skeletonised Rolex Daytona. The client who commissioned the piece wanted to capture the nostalgic splendour of a childhood spent on and around the lake in the autumn months. The bracelet, 40mm case, hands, subdials and parts of the skeletonised movement are all produced in rose gold, so you won’t need rose tinted glasses to feel the nostalgia.

Providing a contrast to the wealth of gold is the grey ceramic bezel, which has a circular grain finish. The specific shade of grey has been chosen to match the ore that can be found on The Borromeo islands, which protrude proudly from the Italian part of the lake. Similarly, portions of the skeletonised movement, visible through the sapphire dial, have been given an anthracite coating to provide further contrast to the gold.

The movement itself is the Calibre 4130, which was entirely hand-cut, bevelled and polished by Artisans de Genève to give a clear and technical appearance. The 4130 is of course the classic movement of the Rolex Daytona, being used in them for over a decade, it has a 72-hour power reserve and provides a chronograph function, small seconds, 30-minute timer and 12-hour timer. And in skeletonised form, it’s a stunner as well.

At its core, this is a surprisingly simple customisation, mainly consisting of a dial makeover and a few colour changes to the regular Ref. 116505. However, in classic Artisans de Genève style they have poured attention into each tiny facet to give an extra degree of charm and flair to every element. It might be the height of summer now, but the gentle greys and golds of the Maggiore have got me excited for when the leaves start to turn golden.
