A.Lange & Söhne Reveal Saxonia Thin Onyx Limited Edition

A Lange and Söhne SAXONIA THIN

The vast majority of A. Lange & Söhne’s watches fall under the banner of dress watches. The Lange 1 is a dress watch with an asymmetrical display, the Richard Lange is a dress watch with vintage influences, the 1815 is described as their contemporary dress watch collection, the Odysseus is a dress watch masquerading as a sports watch, the Zeitwerk is a dress watch with a digital style display and last but by no means least is the Saxonia, which is a dress watch that pays tribute to the brand’s German heritage. This time it’s that dressy heritage that takes our focus with the launch of the new Saxonia Thin onyx limited edition.

A Lange and Söhne SAXONIA THIN

To put it as simply as possible, the Saxonia is heavily influenced by the historic watchmaking region of Saxony, which is the home of Glashütte and not too distant from the home of early 20th century German minimalism, Dessau. It’s therefore a region that’s an absolute melting pot of design ideas, bringing together traditionalist watchmaking ideals and those 1920s ideas about shape and colour.

A Lange and Söhne SAXONIA THIN

That finds itself expressed in the Saxonia Thin onyx through an unwavering focus on the precision and finishing of the display. The dial is made from a thin disc of shiny black onyx over a silver base, creating an intense darkness that’s perfectly smooth and reflective. Onyx and other semi-precious stones have seen increasing use across the past 12 months, including in other Lange watches such as the Lange 1 30th Anniversary edition. Rounding out the display are the long, thin baton hour markers that pair beautifully with the slender hour and minute hands. Unassuming yet shapely – the perfect expression of minimalism with a luxury edge.

There are two versions of the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin onyx being produced. The first is presented in a Honeygold case with matching golden accents across its display while the second is platinum with rhodium accents. Both measure 40mm in diameter with a thickness of 6.2mm, hence the appellation Saxonia Thin. A refined sizing for wrists of all sizes.

Below the surface is the manual winding L093.1 calibre with a 72-hour power reserve. It’s finished in immaculate fashion with an untreated German silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte stripes and a hand-engraved balance cock. It’s visible through the exhibition caseback.

As for pricing and availability, each version of the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin onyx is limited to 200 pieces and in classic Lange fashion are price on request. Given that the standard gold Saxonia Thin is £22,900, expect that to be the lowest possible boundary given the upgraded stone dial and precious metal cases in platinum and proprietary gold.
