In 2022 Farer launched the Cushion Case series and it quickly became a cornerstone collection of the brand. It was the basis of the Moonphase collection in 2023 and then an expanded range in 2024. All of which make use of the original 38.5mm case design, but that’s set to change with the introduction of a new Cushion Case 35mm model with updated case design.
Farer have done more than just take the existing 38.5mm case and miniaturise it. They’ve taken this opportunity to revisit its core shape language, especially when it comes to the bezel. The angles along the edge of the bezel are now significantly sharper, with steeper sides. That’s paired with angled, bat-ear lugs and barrel sides to create a tonneau-esque silhouette. It’s a change that’s designed to preserve the watch’s wrist presence despite its smaller diameter of 35mm and thickness of 10mm.

There are two versions of the watch being produced, which in typical Farer fashion are more distinct from each other than simple colour swaps. Though unlike with other models, the differences between the two are primarily in the texture of the dial rather than more overt elements such as hand-shape, timing scales and indexes.

The red edition is called the Furneaux and it has a rough, cratered appearance like the case on an old camera. The teal version, Belzoni, has a much sleeker texture with a radial appearance. Interestingly they are both produced using the same technique of applying layers paint to the dial and spinning them at high velocity to create a gradient effect and the various textures. A clear lacquer is then applied and polished to really make the colours pop. It’s a technique that was introduced on the Three-Hand Series III.

Another important detail of the dials is that due to the smaller dimensions, there is no room for a small seconds subdial as seen on the 38.5mm versions. As such they are equipped with centre seconds with the signature Farer A tip, alongside alpha-shaped hour and minute hands. Because of this mechanical change to the display, the Cushion Case 35mm uses a different movement too, the Sellita SW210-1 b manual-winding elaboré calibre with 45-hour power reserve.

The new watches are priced at £1,045, which is the same as the 38.5mm models. I think that makes sense given that the quality of the watch is the same and it has redesigned elements along with the new dials. It’s a great addition to the range, widening the array of collectors who can wear it comfortably.
