The Citizen Tsuyosa has become one of the Japanese brand’s best loved watches among collectors since it made its global debut in 2023. The combination of bright colours, attractive integrated bracelet design and strong value proposition make it an ideal first watch for new collectors or a fun summer wear for established collectors. Now they’re doubling down on the fun aspect with their first collaboration with French artist and watch customizer seconde/seconde/ to create the Citizen Tsuyosa x seconde/seconde/.
This collaboration actually harks back to one of the designs that first put seconde/seconde/ on the map: a Rolex where the minute hand was replaced by a pixel sword. The minute hand here has also replaced with a pixel sword but this time it has a strong Japanese influence. Specifically, it’s a katana and it has been pixelated in the style of a vintage Japanese video game.

To emphasise the sharpness of this blade, it has sliced through all the hour markers like Tatami Omote mats, the traditional braided cutting mats seen in exhibitions of blade mastery. It makes for a characterful display full of motion and activity while also exploring Japanese culture – set against a blue backdrop. There are also slash markings across the watch’s clasp on the bracelet and packaging.

Encapsulating the concept behind the design is a quote from seconde/seconde/ found on the caseback: “Being smaller has never stopped Minutes from slicing Hours into pieces”. While looking at the caseback you can also see the calibre 8210 with 42-hour power reserve. That quote isn’t the only way in which this watch slices hours into smaller metrics of time as it’s a limited edition of 3,600 pieces, which is equivalent to the number of seconds in one hour.

While that might sound like barely a limited edition in comparison to other luxury brands who produce 100 or less watches per special edition, you have to remember the overall scale that Citizen operates at. With that context, the Tsuyosa x seconde/seconde/ is an extremely exclusive timepiece and at £369, is likely to sell out incredibly fast, so don’t hang about to order one.
