Panerai Introduce Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa and Chrono Flyback Titanio in Matte Grey

Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa

Panerai have announced that they are continuing their partnership with the Luna Rossa sailing team as they begin their preparations for the 38th America’s Cup in 2027. This edition of the race will hold a special place in Panerai’s heart because it’s the first time that the main event of the America’s Cup (as opposed to the World Series events) will be hosted in Italy – specifically under the watchful gaze of Mount Vesuvius at Naples. In celebration of the first home event, Panerai have announced new editions of the Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rosa and Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio with cool matte grey dials.

Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa

Panerai Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa

I must confess that the Luna Rossa collection has never really tickled my fancy. Tennis is more my speed than yacht racing so the connection to sailing doesn’t particularly excite me -especially with the navy blue signature colour of the team that ties the watch inexorably to the boat. However, for this 2025 edition they’ve done away with the blue completely in order to present the Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa with a clean, matte grey sandwich dial. That’s paired with a black strap with red stripe and a red small seconds hand for a hint of colour.

The case is made from stainless steel and measures 44mm in diameter. That’s substantial, but the Paneristi have always preferred large sizes so that’s no surprise. Panerai have also used a specific stainless steel alloy called AISI 316LVM – 1.4441 Stainless Steel, a variation of the more common 316L. The major difference is that 316LVM has gone through a process called vacuum arc remelting, which removes impurities from the metal. What this means in practice is that it has boosted corrosion resistance and can be polished to a higher shine. The latter characteristic is clearly on display with the fixed bezel.

Panerai Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa

Powering the Luminor Tre Giorni Luna Rossa with matte grey dial is the calibre P.6000, a manual winding movement with a 72-hour power reserve (Tre Giorni meaning 3-days). It’s a deviation from the standard P.900 automatic housed in the previous three hand Luminor Luna Rossa editions. It also notably doesn’t have a date function, making it the only model in the current Luna Rossa range to actually feature the 3 o’clock numeral. It’s priced at £5,700, making it the most accessible Luna Rossa by a margin of around £700.

Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio

Panerai Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio

The Luminor Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa Titanio is the second chronograph model in the Luna Rossa range. Though as the first was the mega-exclusive experience edition from 2023, there is certainly room for another chronograph at a more reasonable price. Like the Tres Giorni model above, the dominant colours here are matte grey along with red accents and a black strap.

Naturally the dial is a bit more complex than the other Luminor, due to the additional chronograph features such as the 12-hour counter subdial and unusual dual centre chronograph hands. One of the central chronograph hands counts seconds while the other counts minutes. It condenses the information typically displayed on a tricompax chronograph into a bicompax layout instead, maintaining a greater visual clarity in keeping with its dive watch heritage. It definitely helps considering there’s the addition of a tachymeter scale around the peripheral edge.

The case has a 100m water resistance rating and is made from brushed titanium. Titanium makes a lot of sense for a high-performance tool watch due to its high strength to density ratio, making it very lightweight without sacrificing integrity. To accommodate the oversize crown locking system, the chronograph pushers are presented at 8 and 10 o’clock rather than their typical position flanking the crown. As a Chrono Flyback model, the chronograph function can be stopped, reset and restarted with a single pusher press – useful for timing race splits.

Making this possible is the P.9100 automatic calibre. Like Tre Giorni, it has a 72-hour power reserve, but this time supplied by a dual power barrel system in series that allows for a more consistent energy release and enables the springs to be thinner, which is better for efficiency. You can view it through the exhibition caseback. For pricing, it sits at £13,400, less than 1/3rd of the previous Chrono Flyback Luna Rossa.

In classic Panerai fashion, both watches released here might look on the surface like they are barely different to existing models, but the details reveal so much more. From the colours on display (which are the most obvious changes) to the use of different materials and different calibres, these are practically brand-new watches. It just shows how strong the Panerai DNA is.
