Depressing as it is winter is almost here, a statement which bodes as ill for your wardrobe as it does the latest season of Game of Thrones. Unlike the latter however, your wardrobe can be fixed. Whether you want to embrace this season’s tendency towards the military or simply need to update a classic piece, here are some of our favourite coats of the season.
Dunhill Textured Herringbone Topcoat, £1,395

For something a little lighter than your usual winter wool coat, this fine-spun example from Dunhill is warm without being stifling. The textured blend of wool and mohair is tamed by a structured, streamlined silhouette, defined by strong shoulders and peak lapels. Completed by a distinctive fly front and vented rear, it’s the perfect coat to wear with Dunhill’s equally exceptional tailoring.
Cerruti Chocolate Checked Virgin Wool Topcoat, £805

With its rich checked cloth, this topcoat from Cerruti is worthy of Sherlock Holmes’ jaunt to the Baskerville estate. Its clean look lets the virgin wool do all the talking while the high collar will ensure not even a squall on the moors will get through. If you’re afraid of looking a bit too old-school, pair with jeans and trainers for a solid retro ensemble.
Alexander McQueen Field Jacket, £2,695

The most militaristic of Alexander McQueen’s otherwise dandyish AW17 collection with its slim, double-breasted construction, this field coat still has some of the great Oscar Wilde about it. Rather than the jacquard weaves that define the rest of the collection though, here flannel jacket is more neutral and accessible, with a detachable fur collar adding a comfortingly luxurious finishing touch.
Kent and Curwen Slim Fit Overcoat, £995

Classic, refined and a necessity for any men’s wardrobe, Kent and Curwen’s overcoat is as minimal as it is smart. With its slim fit your silhouette won’t be lost in all your winter layers and thanks to a few military touches – tie fabric under the lapel and naval buttons – there’s a touch of regimental swagger to this otherwise staple piece.
Paul Smith Men’s Dark Navy ‘A Coat To Travel In’ Wool Peacoat, £750

Building on Paul Smith’s legendary mod style, from the outside this is a pretty traditional peacoat. It has all the right details, from the large collar to the nautically-inspired buttons. This is Paul Smith though and that invariably means at least a little bit of colour – in this case a rainbow of tropical bird feathers for a touch of the tropics in our subdued winter wonderland.
