Spinnaker Introduce SP-5068 Hull Chronograph in Spring Colours

Spinnaker Hull Chronograph SP-5068

If we ever create an affordable alternatives to the Panerai Luminor Chrono article then at the top of the list would be the Spinnaker SP-5068 Hull Chronograph. With its cushion case, sandwich dial and clear chronograph display, the Spinnaker has all the attributes and style of the Italian brand for a fraction of the cost, at just $235 (approx. £185). And now the SP-5068 Hull Chronograph is ready for spring with three new colour options.

Starting with the case, it measures 42mm in diameter in stainless steel featuring a cushion shape and tachymeter bezel. I would prefer it to have a slightly better water resistance rating than the 100m it’s rated to but that’s probably because I’ve been spoiled by the Hull Commander, the dedicated diving model with 300m water resistance. Of course, the reason that water resistance is a bit lower is the inclusion of the chronograph function, requiring additional pushers flanking the crown.

There have been several versions of the Hull Chronograph previously so really the case is pretty familiar at this point. What’s new here are the dials. There are three versions, each inspired by the coming warmth of spring. First is Burnt Maroon, a deep red edition with cream subdials and hour markers that reminds me of a crisp red apple, a fruit that starts growing in the late spring and summer ahead of autumn harvest.

Second is the Sky Blue, which to no one’s surprise is sky blue in colour. The blue of the dial is paired with dark grey chronograph subdials like spring rain clouds hanging in the sky. Lastly there’s the Shire Green edition, which I predict to be the most popular. It has a lush green dial with a slight fumé gradient that gets darker around the edge of the display. It has a similar vibe to the Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph, it even has a similar oversize date window, albeit at 12 o’clock rather than 6.

Beneath the surface is the Japanese SII-VK73 meca-quartz movement. Meca-quartz is a form of hybrid movement with the main timekeeping functions of the watch being battery powered while the chronograph module is mechanical. It brings the utility and accessibility of quartz while having a mechanical feel, the best of both worlds.

As mentioned, the Spinnaker SP-5068 Hull Chronograph is genuinely accessible at a price of £229. Making it one of the best value propositions around, especially with its fun colours and large cushion case and leather strap.
