When it comes to Glashütte Original we tend to think of them as a relatively serious German watch brand producing serious pieces of horology like the SeaQ and PanoMatic. However, they’re also a brand who know how to have fun and their outlet for that is often their retro Seventies Chronograph collection. Last year they launched two brightly coloured limited editions and now those watches are back with a twist in the form of the Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date Limited Editions for 2023.
At their core, the two new watches are essentially pastel versions of the 2022 models with black chronograph counters instead of monochrome display. The “Disco Blue” from last year is now “Ocean Breeze” and the “Vibing Orange” is now “Golden Bay”. In addition to some cool names, the colours are great. I love the gentleness of their tone and the smoothness of the matte lacquer. The black subdials also help to break up the display a little and make it more visually interesting.
Beyond the new dials, it’s business as usual for the Seventies Chronograph. It features a 40mm x 40mm square case in stainless steel presented on either a rubber strap or steel bracelet. And houses the Glashütte Original Calibre 37-02, an automatic chronograph movement with 70-hour power reserve in addition to hours, minutes, chronograph seconds, small seconds, 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter, panorama date and power reserve indicator. The 12-hour counter is the long aperture located above the hand stack.
There might not be too much that’s new about these watches but they’re still really cool releases all the same. As a stalwart fan of the colour orange, I definitely lean towards the “Golden Bay” as my preference. The combination of that name and colour conjure images of sunset over the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate bridge in my head. In terms of price and availability, both colourways are limited to 100 pieces at £14,400 on steel bracelet or £13,300 on rubber.
