Grand Seiko Re-Create Their First Model in Titanium with Elegance 110th Anniversary

Grand Seiko Elegance 110th Anniversary Re-Creation SBGW295

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the first Seiko wristwatch ever produced, the Laurel. Seiko has already launched a watch in celebration, the Presage Takumi ‘Laurel’ and now it’s Grand Seiko’s turn, with the Grand Seiko Elegance 110th Anniversary Re-Creation SBGW295.

The case has a 38mm diameter and is made from Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium, making it lightweight and incredibly durable despite its vintage appearance. It’s also effortlessly elegant with its sleek round shape and understated knurled crown.

However, the highlight of the anniversary edition is the dial, which features a jet black Urushi lacquer made entirely in Japan. The golden coloured hour markers are then produced with a second technique called maki-e, a process of building up layer after layer of lacquer to give a three-dimensional appearance, which is then coated in a dusting of 24k gold powder. And if that weren’t difficult enough, it’s all made on a curved dial.

It’s definitely worth the difficulties though because the richness and depth of colour is gorgeous. Equally gorgeous is the movement housed inside, which is visible through the exhibition caseback. It’s the 9S64 manual calibre, which has an accuracy of +5/-3 seconds per day and a power reserve of 72-hours.

Another nod to Grand Seiko’s Japanese heritage is the leather strap it’s presented on. Thin strips of calf leather and fabric have been woven together in a style called yoroiori, an ancient technique used in Samurai armour, which gives it a unique texture and appearance. Alternatively, there’s a plain leather option.

The Grand Seiko Elegance 110th Anniversary Re-Creation SBGW295 is available in a limited edition of 500 pieces and is priced at £12,450. While comparing this watch to the Seiko Takumi ‘Laurel’ is redundant because of the huge price difference – almost £11,000 – I do find it interesting just how different they are despite being inspired by the same watch. It just goes to show the variety and depth of technical skill in Japanese watchmaking.
