While highlights from industry insiders are all well and good, sometimes you just want the hard numbers. So, we worked with our friends over at WatchAnalytics to highlight the five watches that, in 2022, didn’t just go up in value, but went up enough to make even a devoted collector consider parting with them.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas 47040/000a-9008, RRP €13,000
Up 144.4% +£16,343

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas 47040/000a-9008 is the top performer of the year with a price increase of 144.4%, in real terms that’s +£16,343. What makes this watch so desirable at the moment is its well-proportioned and sporty 42mm steel case and blue dial combination.
One potential reason for this is that the Nautilus 5711 is currently at stratospheric heights following its discontinuation and people are looking for alternatives with the same class and aesthetic. Plus, it’s been a great year for Vacheron Constantin in general.

A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph 401.031, RRP €51,500
Up 109.43% +£33,298

While everyone is talking (as always) about the Grande Lange 1 from A. Lange & Söhne, it’s actually a different Lange model that is the second best performing watch of 2022. The 1815 Chronograph 401.031 is up by 109.43%, +£33,298. It’s a bi-compax flyback chronograph with a peripheral pulsometer scale. Pulsometers are uncommon, and therefore popular, as most chronographs feature a more conventional tachymeter.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar Q130842J, RRP €29,200
Up 74.57% +£9,567

Rounding out the list of top 5 best performing watches with an increase of 74.57%, +£9,567, is Dr Strange’s watch, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar Q130842J. It is a fabulous watch in its own right but it makes me wonder whether the fact it played a pivotal role in a Hollywood blockbuster has impacted its value at all. Especially with an ambassador like Benedict Cumberbatch championing it.
