Watch of the Week: The Montblanc Summit Smartwatch

Montblanc Summit Smartwatch

They may have been one of the more forward-thinking watchmakers with their smart strap but now with the Summit Montblanc have finally made the leap into the world of smart watches – and into bed with none other than the almighty Google.

Dubbed the Summit, it’s a bold step for Montblanc given that the TAG Heuer Connected is already pretty well established. Still, their technological partnership with the company that all but owns the internet has granted them use of the all new Android Wear 2.0 operating system, putting it on par with most current generation phones.

Rather than one of Montblanc’s Swiss movements, the Summit comes equipped with Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor which certainly makes timekeeping a problem of the past. It also makes the watch lightning-quick and responsive to every touch.

Of course, if all you wanted was a smart watch there are plenty of other options. The Summit is something different. It might have a screen rather than a dial but everything from the shape of the case to the domed sapphire crystal screams Montblanc. With a AMOLED display you might not even be able to tell right away that it’s even digital – which is the point.

Though it might be loaded with all the apps a smartwatch can make the most of – heart rate monitor, microphone, gyroscope, etc – the Summit still adheres to the tenets of Montblanc as a brand, chief amongst which is quality. Based on the award-winning 1858, the Summit isn’t just technologically smart.

If you bought into the Apple Watch the likelihood is that next year you’ll have replaced it. You’ll do the same the following year and the year after that as well. The Summit is not so disposable. It may be digital but it’ll sit nicely alongside your collection of mechanical timepieces perfectly.
