Watch of the Week: MB&F HM6 Alien Nation

MB&F HM6 Alien Nation

For a while know we’ve thought of MB&F as the watchmaker for Sci-Fi nerds with deep pockets. We love it. The Starfleet and Destination Moon table clocks, the Astrograph pen, Max Busser loves shooting for the stars as literally as possible. In their latest take on the phenomenal HM6 that love is taken to its illogical extreme. Rather than transporting us to the cosmos, the HM6 Alien Nation brings the cosmos to us.

A series of four unique pieces, the Alien Nation elevates the already unusual HM6 to new heights of strange by colonizing the movement with a council of five 18-karat gold aliens. Perfectly visible through the sapphire crystal case, they don’t actually do anything but are happy to sit there are the movement whirrs away.

Part of that might be because they have faith in their captain, a sixth big-eyed alien sitting astride the watch far more charmingly than any space jockey of Ridley Scott’s imagination. Given the innate space-faring characteristics of even the ‘standard’ HM6, his presence also makes a lot more sense.

For the first time the entire case is made from sapphire crystal – well, 12 separate pieces that come together perfectly to imitate an unbroken whole. It’s a far more impressive achievement than any other attempts at mixing crystals with aliens. We’re looking at you Spielberg; you failed us there.

So far so… alien. Yet turn of the lights and things get altogether more extra-terrestrial with a light show to put Close Encounters of the Third Kind to shame. A ring of intense lume courtesy of MB&F regular collaborator Black Badger surrounds the watch, as well as forming the numerals and indexes. Forget a room, it’s enough to light up a good part of the final frontier.

The HM6 has always been an individual watch and there’s still nothing quite like it out there and, like the late Starman himself, the Alien Nation is way, way out there. To put it into Sci-Fi terms, MB&F’s latest eccentric novelty is thankfully a lot more Aliens than Battlefield Earth.
