Richard Mille have just released their first-ever in-house tourbillion movement, and no, it’s not housed inside a butch piece of arm-candy, but the elegant RM71-01 ladies watch. While Richard Mille’s technical achievement of producing its first in-house tourbillon movement is no doubt the talking point; the RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman manages to steal some of the spotlight with its sheer beauty.
Granted Richard Mille isn’t the first watchmaker that comes to mind for women’s timepieces, but this collection of ten timepieces is stunning.
As a watch it’s both high jewellery and haute horology, combining aesthetic influences as diverse as Art Deco and African tribal masks with an ultra-high-performance movement worthy of an exceptional watchmaker. It’s an entirely new, seriously feminine side to the brand, but one that’s unmistakably Richard Mille.
First of all, their signature tonneau case is still very much present, and the mind only boggles at exactly how you can create a skeletonised, curved tourbillon to fit. There’s still the brand’s industrial aesthetic, though tempered with the glitter of diamonds. Even the dials remain technical to the extreme, but centred on the titular talismans, beautiful centrepieces that add a dash of colour.
There are ten variations of the RM71-01 Talisman, each with its own colourway and each limited to just five examples worldwide. If anyone dares say women’s watches don’t need to be technical, show them these.
