Oris Launch Waldenburgerbahn Limited Edition in Honour of Historic Railway

Oris’ latest Big Crown has ditched the skies to instead focus on a different mode of transport, the railways. It’s the Big Crown Pointer Date Waldenburgerbahn, which is perhaps the most German name around, named after the historic Waldenburg railway that runs through Oris’ hometown of Hölstein.

Aesthetically, it’s a very classy interpretation of the regular Big Crown Pointer Date. It has a 40mm diameter case in stainless steel with a domed sapphire glass over a matte dial. Naturally, it has the Big Crown’s signature railway track minute scale, which takes on an even more thematic role in this edition.

The main homage to the railway comes in the form of the commemorative caseback engraved with a steam locomotive. The Waldenburgerbahn has been in operation since 1904 although it has recently undergone 18 months of renovations, set to re-open in December this year. Hence, the occasion for Oris’ celebratory release.

Oris Big Crown Waldenbergerbahn

Under the surface is the Oris 754 automatic calibre. It’s based on the Sellita SW200-1 with the addition of the Oris pointer date function. The pointer date, as its name suggests, is a type of date complication that operates by having a central hand pointing to a peripheral date scale as opposed to the traditional date window. While the Oris 754 is a staple of the Big Crown collection, it would be nice to see Oris develop a new version with a power reserve larger than 38-hours.

The Oris Waldenburgerbahn is limited to 1,000 pieces, available at a price of £1,750. That puts it at the same price as the non-limited bronze Big Crown Pointer Dates, which for a limited edition in steel with a commemorative caseback feels about right.
