Given the haute horology nature of the new Molnar Fabry Nightingale Minute Repeater, it wasn’t just the watchmakers famed skills of embellishment that were put to the test in this unique watch, but their watchmaking credentials too, particularly when it comes to restoration.
Created as a special order for a customer, the watch is based on a vintage movement from a Paul H. Matthey pocket watch, one that had to be completely restored due to its age and wear. As well as adapting the movement to a different case, every facet of the calibre was immaculately embellished, the signature of Molnar Fabry.
Bevelling, mirror polishing, banknote deep relief engraving, the Nightingale is a masterpiece showcasing precisely what the Slovakian brand is capable of. All of that finishing, across the minute repeater movement, can be glimpsed through the Nightingale’s skeletonised dial.
Unlike many skeleton watches, that dial still maintains decent legibility, mainly thanks to the white lacquered indexes and contrast between the blue rhodium and steel parts. The final touch is the beautifully vintage-inspired hands, crafted from 18kt pink gold using Molnar Fabry’s characteristically ornate design.
The obsession to detail throughout the Nightingale is extraordinary. Every surface is finished to a startling degree, so much so that it took a year of work before it was ready. The results speak for themselves; it was time well spent.
