After the inexplicable popularity of the Q Timex 1979 Reissue last year the American watch brand will be giving us another update on the classic look. This time we can expect the same iconic design but with a Japanese automatic movement powering it instead of the quartz of last year’s model.
The release of last year’s watch was met with a lot of hype and in fact the first batch sold out in a matter of hours and with a list of people already filling up to be notified when this is released we can only assume the same thing will happen with the M79.
A few key differences from the Q is the substitution of the ‘Pepsi’ bezel for a ‘Batman’ unidirectional one along with a slight beefing of the dimensions from 38mm to 40mm to accommodate the 21 jewel Miyota movement.
The back will also have a display window to prove to any naysayers that Timex do make automatic watches. They have kept the day-date windows at three o’clock along with the thin sword minute hand with a small addition to the hour hand of a T inside the tip of the hand. One assumes in a nod to the iconic Mercedes hand of Rolex.
What fans will be especially pleased about though is the continued use of the woven steel bracelet. Taken from the original 1979 model this super comfy stretch of steel takes this watch too another level stylistically. Proof that not all watch straps are created equal.
