If the name Tudor conjures up images of cool diving watches and not much else, let us introduce you to the new Glamour Double Date. Boasting an in-house movement and full redesign a world away from the Black Bay line, it’s a new twist for Rolex’s younger sibling.
At 42mm the Glamour Double Date isn’t exactly feminine in size. In fact, in the stunning steel and blue version, it’s quite the opposite. It’s refined, elegant and just a great-looking timepiece. Things get a little more interesting however in the bi-colour, diamond-set version.
The full steel has plenty of detail – more than nearly any other Tudor – but it’s in the bi-colour that you can actually see it clearly. The double bezel is highlighted with the lower layer in gold, the upper layer in steel, contrasting with the golden, diamond-set dial. That dial is embellished with three different finishes: sunray on the outer ring, vertical gadrooning on the central dial and snailing on the small seconds subdial.
In the hands of another watchmaker, all that could mean an overly ornate watch, but Tudor has managed to keep things on the robust side of things. Despite all that detail, the overall case remains hardwearing, waterproof and, thanks to the new in-house movement, unerringly precise.
The movement is the jewel in Tudor’s crown. The manufacture calibre MT5641 is exclusive to the new model and is the first with a small seconds hand. It’s been built for reliability more than anything, but it’s nonetheless a seriously good-looking movement, complete with alternating polished and sandblasted surfaces and laser decoration.
The biggest deal though isn’t that the movement’s reliable or beautiful; they kind of go without saying. It’s that the COSC certified in-house addition doesn’t up the price, which starts at £2,300 on a leather strap.
Glamour might not be the first word that comes to mind at the mention of Tudor, but with the new Glamour Double Date, that may be about to change.
