Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, the Italians know how to get a motor running; at the same time, Italian watch collectors have been leading the way since they all but started Rolex-mania 30-odd years back. Yet since Panerai evacuated Florence, there’s been little to tie the twin passions of cars and watches together on Italian soil. That’s where Sconvolto comes in.
Like an Aventador tearing across the Alps, it’s hard to miss Sconvolto’s striking Amortizzato timepiece; it’s almost as loud, albeit in a completely different way. The dramatic, curved shape of the 41mm x 55mm heat-treated aluminium alloy case makes it so the dial feels set into a dashboard, which is no coincidence. The layout and numerals of the dials take direct inspiration from Veglia-Borletti’s famous motoring instruments.
Between the watches in Sconvolto’s collection, these dials pay homage to specific cars, iconic of their decade across the 60s, 70s and 80s. In the red and black Tipo A, that’s the Giulia GT Junior; for the black and white Tipo D, the Contagiri per Competizione; for the blue, black and white Tipo F it’s the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso and finally for the Tipo L, in its orange, black and yellow, it’s the Lancia Delta HF Integrale.
Inside each is the workhorse Miyota 9015 or 82S5 automatic movement (depending on whether it’s a date or small seconds timepiece) complete with a solid 42-hour power reserve. Either is an accessible movement, and one that means that, despite the flair behind the eye-catching design and attention paid to the unique dials, prices for the Sconvolto Amortizzato range from €899 to €989.
For a beautifully-curved, iconically-coloured, uniquely-Italian timepiece, that’s not bad at all. It’s certainly a good deal more affordable than the cars that inspired it.
