Rum isn’t something we’re normally apt to hark on about here at OT. It just doesn’t tend to be good enough to warrant our attention. Havana Club’s Tributo is different. Each year there’s an entirely new one released, honouring a different aspect of the rum-making process. It’s one of the few rums out there that you could call a collectors’ item.
This year Havana Club are paying their respects to the cask used to age the spirit. This version of course blends the usual exceptional reserves squirreled away by the Cuban distillery but ages the spirit in whisky casks. The result is a rum that treads the line between sweet and smoky and can hold its own in any Scotch collection. I’m not about to suggest mixing it in a cocktail but… well, it makes one hell of an old fashioned.
