Hanhart Launch New 417 ES Flyback Collection in Panda and Reverse Panda Colourways

Hanhart 417 ES Reverse Panda and Panda

There’s a reason we included Hanhart in our Best German Watchmakers You Need to Know article. And that’s because they’re one of the best the of country’s hallowed horological industry. You should know them, if not for their vintage Fliegers then for their modern revival watches like the 417 ES, which they launched two years ago. Now, a new version of the archival pilot’s watch is joining the collection, the Hanhart 417 ES Flyback in Panda and Reverse Panda styles.

The case is more or less identical to that original 2020 revival. It has a distinctive fluted bezel with a red marker at 12 o’clock, which sits atop a classy round case with retro pushers and a knurled crown. However, unlike the 2020 version, the 417 ES Flyback is available in two sizes, 42mm and 39mm. The latter size is inspired by the 417 ES 1954 heritage recreation from earlier this year.

As well as being available in two sizes, there are two colourways on offer. The first is a traditional Panda design with a white dial and black subdials, it’s a style popularised by racing chronographs like the Rolex Daytona but it also works fantastically on pilot’s watches because of its stark contrasting tones and easy legibility. The same is true of the second colourway, which is reverse panda with a black dial and white subdials, which has a stronger military style in the vein of the Dirty Dozen.

Inside, the 417 ES Flyback houses the Sellita AMT5100 M, a manual wind calibre with a 58-hour power reserve. What makes it stand out from the calibres used in the previous 417 ES models is that it has a Flyback function, which allows you to stop and reset the central chronograph seconds hand with a single pusher press. Historic Hanharts all had this feature although it was called “Temposchaltung”, so this is another way in which they’re engaging with their heritage.

Hanhart 417 ES 39mm Reverse Panda

With four different configurations, this marks a substantial expansion of the collection and all four share the same price. Specifically, they’re each €2,390 (approx. £2,075). In many ways this is Hanhart simply doing what they do best and it’s tough to find a reason not to love it.
