Interstellar is one of those films that stays with you years after you last watched it. I’ve only seen it once and yet I still remember McConaughey’s gripping performance as he navigates the twists and turns of space travel. However, what sticks in my mind even stronger than the mind-bending climax is the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph that features in the film. Now, Hamilton have released a new version of that timepiece at 38mm.
The original Murph was released in 2019 as an accurate recreation of the watch that featured in 2014 film Interstellar. However, at 42mm, a large proportion of Hamilton collectors found it to be too large and calls for a smaller edition quickly rang out. A few years later and that’s exactly what we have here, a minimised, though still faithful, revamp of the on-screen watch at 38mm.
Getting into specifics, the case has an understated aesthetic with a classy round design and smooth bezel. Contrasting polished and brushed finishes are enough to catch the eye without compromising on its tool watch vibe. After all, it is a member of the Hamilton Khaki Field collection, which is a collection that favours watches that are practical and of great value for money – worthy of being called one of the best mechanical field watches around.
One of the most recognisable elements of the watch is its dial. It has a matte black base with large Arabic numerals and cathedral hands, with both the hands and hour markers coated in vintage style beige lume. It gives the piece a strong retro aesthetic as if it were a heritage field watch from the 1940s. It still looks great even at the reduced size.
Inside, the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm houses the same movement as the 42mm version despite the differences in size. It’s the Hamilton H-10, an automatic calibre based on the ETA C07.611, which is a staple across virtually every Hamilton collection thanks to its stunning 80-hour power reserve. Through the watch’s exhibition caseback you can see its contrasting snailed and pearled pattern finishes.
The price. Well, it’s a 38mm steel watch with a lovely vintage dial and a great movement. So, considering that watches with common ETA movements are going for £1,000 or more these days, surely the Hamilton is similar or higher? Nope, it’s just £820, making it a genuine no brainer.
