Father’s day is almost upon us once again and with it our annual gift guide. While I personally prefer a cursory nod to be the closest possible patriarchal interaction, apparently some of you like to actually show some affection. Still, even if I’m on a different familial wavelength however we at Oracle Time are always happy to help out.
So without further family counselling-worthy preamble, here is our guide to everything a father could want. At least if he has any taste.
Focal Listen Circum-Aural Headphones, £179
Everyone that can tell the Beatles from Black Sabbath and the Monkees from Motley Crue deserves a good pair of headphones and the Circum-Aurals from Focal are a great deal more than good. The closed design and large ear pads help stop any outside interference and also make them among the most comfortable headphones around. Of course, they sound fantastic too, even wirelessly. Thankfully they also come with 20 hours of battery life – all without having to stomp up Sennheiser levels of cash; www.focal.com
Loewe Klang 9
Headphones are great, but you don’t really want to have them on at home – provided you have semi-decent taste in music of course. Yet even without listening to them you can’t help but love Loewe’s Klang 9 wireless loudspeakers. The combination of black main speaker and that amber gold frame is stunning in a minimalist kind of way. They also happen to sound the part with a powerful ranger of woofers, mid-range speakers and a tweeter. Bonus points if you have the matching bild 9 screen; www.loewe.com
Creed Aventus, £230
As far as we’re concerned, Creed has yet to create a duff fragrance. Their range is filled with a diverse roster of scents in inventive combinations. Yet for some reason we always find ourselves going back to the classic: Aventus. It could be the woody, jasmine-influenced centre, the sweet flourish of vanilla and oak at the finish or the intense, fruity beginning. Or it could just be that we’re addicted to it like olfactory crack. Either way, it’s a fragrance that any man can and should get away with; www.creedfragrances.co.uk
L.O.N.B. Vagabond All Day Bag, £2,250
Finding a bag that can not only hold everything you need for a full day but looks slick too is no mean feat. Trust us, we’ve tried. Practicality and fine leather just don’t go together as often as they should. Except in L.O.N.B’s Vagabond bag that is. The zips and stitching look a lot like a classic motorcycle jacket, but the Havanna calf leather is far softer and more sumptuous. It’s big enough to fit a change of clothes and everything that entails but nobody’ll look at you strangely if you bust into a business meeting with it after your gym session. Provided you have actually remembered to change of course; lonb.com
Silhouette Titan Breeze Sunglasses, £227
The sun’s here – at least for now – and that means it’s sunglasses weather. But while it’s easy to wheel out the same old pair of tired clubmasters year after year, encourage something a little bit cooler. Silhouette have yet to make their mark in the UK but it’s only a matter of time with frames like the Titan Breeze. Big, bold and unusual, the curved double bridge and large lenses make them a great contemporary alternative to standard Ray Ban aviators. If the blue pair don’t have pride of place on Tom Cruise in the new Top Gun there is no justice in the world; www.pretavoir.co.uk
Asmodus Spruzza 80W BF Squonk Vape Kit, £109.99
Honestly, we didn’t just choose this because every other word sounds like a child’s euphemism for mummy and daddy’s adult fun time. The fact is, cigarettes are more than harmful to your health, they’re passé. A good vape both stops you pumping your body with tar and gives you hipster credentials, especially when it’s as advanced as this. It’s customisable if you want to tinker with it, but you won’t find that trippy stained wood anywhere else. Throw in a few bottles of e-liquid in the recipient’s favourite colours and you’re done; www.asmodus.com
The Macallan Ruby, £225
Macallan has just released a phenomenal 50 year old for upwards of 25k. That’s pretty damn pricey and if it’s the kind of gift you give please be our friend. If not, the Macallan Ruby is a pretty great alternative. Sherry cask finishing is in alcoholic vogue right now and you don’t need to read the tasting notes to expect a host of rich dried fruit, ginger and nutmeg. Nowadays every liquor cabinet needs a sherry finish whisky, so why not make it the definitive Speyside stalwart? It’s about a 10th of the price of the 50 year old too which is nice; www.themacallan.com
Tom Dixon Tank Decanter Set, £130
Of course, getting the right spirit is only half the battle. The other is being able to drink it in style – and this hand-blown decanter and glass set from Tom Dixon is nothing if not stylish. Rather than the usual clear crystal all elements have a fusion of black and clear glass which is deceptively hard to make. The finishing touch is a solid black stopper sitting at the top like Saruman’s orb. Well, the actual finishing touch is an ice cube in the whisky, but it’s still before five here; www.tomdixon.net
Private White V.C. X Jaguar Driving Jacket, £595
The British weather doesn’t leave much room for guesswork. It always does what you don’t want it to. Therefore every guy needs a coat that can manage wet, dry, hot, cold and the myriad combinations in-between. Private White V.C.’s new collaboration with British heritage marque Jaguar is just that. It also happens to look great too, in vintage 1960s style.
Speaking of which, there’s still time to win this very jacket in our latest competition! Just click here for more information and good luck. Maybe don’t leave Father’s Day entirely to chance though; www.privatewhitevc.com
Christopher Ward C60 Trident Bronze Pro 600, £795
Well we had to put a watch in here, didn’t we? Don’t worry though, this one is definitely in the gifting price range. It’s Christopher Ward; well-priced timepieces is exactly what they do, and the C60 Trident Bronze Pro 600 is very well-priced indeed. Not only is it a serious deep-water watch, but it’s in line with the world’s current obsession with bronze. Even better: it’s now available in a much more accessible 38mm size. If you’re trying to find a good diving watch to fit a smaller wrist, look no further; www.christopherward.co.uk
