Who doesn’t love Pac-Man? I mean that, seriously. Never in history has a pie chart charmed people so much outside of an accountancy convention; never has one creature been so addicted to pills outside of Wolf of Wall Street.
The fact is he’s a cultural icon – as are his four famous frenemies, Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde – so it should only come as mild bemusement to hear that Pac-Man has been immortalised on a watch. It should come as even less of a surprise that it’s been done by RJ Watches.
RJ are about as eccentric a watchmaker as you can get. Trends? Nah. Seriousness? Give me a break. They’re essentially the Clyde of the horological world, off in their own little world. The RJ Pac-Man Level III is the culmination of that.
Created in collaboration with Bandai Namco – the company that owns Pacman’s contract into slavery – the Level III looks cartoony but is a serious piece of craftsmanship. The various dial components, from Pac-Man to Pac-Dots has been placed in three layers for a full 3D effect. It’s kind of ironic that it has more dimensions than the game.
The finishing is typically exceptional, with a mirror-finished black dial, lacquer-filled maze walls and that stand-out, industrial-style case. The cherry (100 points) on top? A big yellow likeness of the Pac-Man himself on the caseback.
Limited to just 80 pieces worldwide and available June 2018, we don’t have a confirmed price yet. That said, the previous version was £14,500 so this is a watch you’ll have to save your quarters for.
