When Czapek & Cie started they were one of these ‘less is more’ classical kind of watchmakers. How times have changed. It still has the same overall style as the original pieces, but the Place Vendome Tourbillon Suspendu ‘Ici Et Ailleurs’ is a world away technically.
Somehow the seemingly pared-back dial includes the titular tourbillon, a second time zone, day-night indicator and a power reserve. Part of that is of course brilliant watchmaking, another part is the 43.5mm size, a little bit larger than most. It just allows those crucial extra millimetres to stop the dial feeling crowded.
This version of the watch however also includes a little more aesthetic craftsmanship than previous models with Roman acanthus leaves engraved on the pushers and sides of the watch. It’s fitting given the roman numerals across the dial. They are created by none other than Michele Rothen Rebetez – a name that might not mean much until you realise they are one of the most talented engravers in the industry.
Inside is Czapek & Cie’s SXH2 “Haute Horlogerie” hand-wound movement which is as beautifully finished (as seen through the sapphire case back) as the case itself. Sure for a relative newcomer the price tag of CHF 120,000 for platinum and CHF 107,000 (£91,500 and £81,500 respectively) might seem a bit steep, but the bottom line is the new Place Vendome is definitely worth it.
