CODE41 Mecascape “Sublimation One” Reinvents the Mechanical Landscape of Watchmaking

If you look at cutting edge watchmaking today, you’ll find there’s an obsession with making things smaller. Many brands are fighting to produce the thinnest, compressed movements and watches possible, but why? While impressive on a technical level it’s hard to find emotion in them and emotion is vital in an object you spend your life with. A different approach to revolutionary watchmaking is that of CODE41. They seek to enlarge the emotion of a watch, to stretch it out until it becomes not just a watch but a mechanical landscape, a Mecascape. Which is what they’ve done with the launch of the CODE41 Mecascape “Sublimation One”.

Trying to define the Mecascape is a difficult task. On a theoretical level it’s about redefining the parameters with which we view time and space where time and space are but components within a larger concept. On a practical level, the CODE41 Mecascape is an object that tells the time in a portable format that is neither wristwatch, pocket watch or clock and yet has attributes of all three.

Structurally, it has a 108mm x 71mm case made from grade 5 titanium with a sapphire crystal glass and anti-reflective coating. There’s also an exhibition window built into the titanium caseback. The ‘dial’ features a regulator style display with hours, minutes and seconds on separate subdials supported by a skeletonised frame.

Additionally, there’s a power reserve indicator, date wheel and second time zone function. The placement of each function within the space of the Mecascape is informed by the Golden Ratio, a mathematical sequence frequently used in architecture that determines the ideal proportions and placement of design elements.

Its size is comparable to that of a smartphone (before the latest gen phones became the size of tablets) meaning any pocket where you keep you phone is perfectly suited to the Mecascape, although the ideal pocket would be your inside jacket one. Transport is consequently no issue. Then, at your destination, whether home or the office, the Mecascape comes with a titanium stand that allows you to display it horizontally.

The movement has been created in collaboration with the independent Swiss watchmaking workshop Cercle des Horlogers and during the piece’s development they had to overcome some interesting challenges. For example, there’s a great distance between each of the Mecascape’s components, requiring a total recalibration of the tools used in its creation. However, the result is pretty spectacular: a manual wind movement with an 8-day power reserve and 28,800vph that has its architecture spread across the full scope of the display.

At first the Mecascape will only be available in the form of the Sublimation One edition available in three different colourways, with more on the way. CODE41 have a proven track record in creating fantastic recolours and fresh interpretations of their watches such as the ANOMALY T-4. The Mecascape is priced at £9,950 and pre-orders are open right now here.
