There is an incredibly broad spectrum of designs when it comes to chronographs, they run the full gamut from sporty to elegant and the quintessential example of an elegant chronograph are those made by Carl F. Bucherer. One of the coolest chronos they produce, and the most popular, is the Manero Flyback, which is now available with a green dial for the first time.
The watch’s popularity is testament to its excellent design because many people would find its 43mm diameter stainless steel case to be large. Although the size is justified by helping to keep the subdials and scales legible. Plus, the people have spoken and it evidently isn’t a problem.

Of course, the new Manero Flyback Green is simply a recolour of the existing watch so the case size isn’t much of a revelation, nor is the dial layout. A bicompax design with small seconds, a 30-minute timer, a peripheral tachymeter, a date window at 6 and perforated lancet-shaped hour and minute hands.

As for the recolour itself, I really like it. The olive green is a great shade, subtle yet strong at the same time. Additionally, the inclusion of a red chronograph hand is excellent, providing contrast and legibility. The red hand is a feature that’s only found on a select few Manero Flybacks like the “Retro-Design” edition.

If the dial were a matte colour and you simplified the shapes of the hands and hour markers a bit, you’d suddenly be looking at a surprisingly military style watch. However, as is, it’s much more in keeping with 2021’s flavour of the year approach to green watches. Not a bad thing considering it looks great.
Inside, it houses the CFB 1970 automatic flyback chronograph movement, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. Its 42-hour power reserve is fine, in line with it being a core collection for Carl F. Bucherer. And with a price of £4,700 it’s one of the most affordable versions of the Manero Flyback that they produce.
