The French navy are, as you might expect, demanding when it comes to their equipment. Everything they use invariably has to be not only fit for purpose, but the best in class, right down to their watches. After all, during military manoeuvres, every second counts. So it was that Le Forban Sécurité Mer found themselves on the wrists of the French Navy back in 1969.
Over half a century has gone by since then, throughout which LFSM has built 20-odd different models and, like many of its contemporaries, was lost to the tides of history. That is until the name was resurrected last year and, more importantly, introduced a brand new flagship timepiece to rise from the ashes.

Leveraging the sleek, militaristic look of their vintage watches, the modern renaissance of LFSM have created the Malouine, a watch directly inspired by the brand’s history. That of course means it’s a true tool watch, with a screw-down crown leading to 150m water resistance and a solid, 120-click diving bezel. Yet what underpins that practicality is a sense of elegance and retro charm that most tool watches are lacking.

The result is an incredibly versatile timepiece whose 38.5mm size is suited to any but the most macho of wrists. It also happens to be incredibly comfortable, a necessity for a watch you can and will wear anywhere.

A lot of that versatility also comes from the dial. Available in a gorgeous sunburst blue or deep black lacquer, each with a matching bezel, both have a silver ring inspired by a 1972 LSFM model. That and the subtle tricolore underneath the Malouine name make for an instantly-recognisable and inescapably French timepiece.

Finished with a domed crystal and powered by the ever-reliable Miyota 8215 movement – a classic amongst well-priced watches – the Malouine is a welcome splash into the high tide of accessible dive watches, and one with a wealth of history behind it.

With so many pieces contained within the horological archives of Le Forban Sécurité Mer though, you can be sure that this is just the start of a new era for the brand.
