OMEGA’s big news of Baselworld 2018 was firmly terrestrial with the complete overhaul of the famous Seamaster 300m. Thankfully though, the Speedmaster didn’t escape the orbit of OMEGA’s attentions with the new Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8.
The original version of this watch was great, but not exactly groundbreaking, just a Speedmaster given a pitch-black overhaul. Not so the 2018 version. It’s still dark to the point of sinister, but with the kind of sporty yellow highlights you’d expect on a racing watch. Most impressively though are the engravings.
At first glance you assume the relief of the moon is on the dial; look closer and you’ll see it’s been etched directly into the bridges of the movement. On the front is the safe side; the reverse shows the dark, complete with a famous albeit foreboding quote from Apollo command: “We’ll see you on the other side.”
