We’ve lost count of the times Seiko has drawn inspiration from nature and ancient craftsmanship. But now the accessible Japanese watchmaker is bringing them both together for a new limited edition devoted to the art of Bonsai: the Seiko Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition in Matsuba-iro green.
As the name suggests, the new watch is a collaboration, specifically with Tokyo-based Tradman’s Bonsai, who are essentially a streetwear slant on the horticultural art form. Think Bonsai themed prints for Japanese fashion labels. A collaboration with a watchmaker like Seiko therefore makes perfect sense. Rather than the usual Prospex or 5 Sports lines however, Tradman’s Bonsai have opted for the dressier Presage.
The dial of course is where the action is with its Matsuba-iro green, a deep, dark colour directly taken from pine needles as a traditional symbol of longevity. Underneath the colour is an embossed pattern echoing pine bark, far more subtle than other textured Seiko dials thanks to the dark green, but one that comes alive when it catches the light. Finished with gold bar indexes, elegantly curved hands and lettering, it doesn’t exactly feel very ‘street’.
In fact, the 38mm, gold-plated steel case feels very vintage with its slim, coin-edge bezel, as does the 7-link, jubilee-style bracelet. It’s dressier than most other Presage models and the classic green / gold colourway is timeless. Though if you want a bit more fun with it, the Seiko Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition also comes with an embossed strap with a three-pronged pine pattern. It all depends how much you want to hammer home the horticulture.
Inside is Seiko’s 6R51 automatic movement. You should know the drill by now: +25/-15 seconds accuracy per day, a weekend-proof 72-hour power reserve and the reliability of a watchmaker who excels at this price point.
Speaking of price point, the Seiko Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition will set you back £1,250, which is a great place for a handsome dress watch to sit. It’s similar in style and tone to the Frederique Constant Classics Index Automatic for £1,095, particularly when it comes to dial colour. But given the texture of the dial and the bright gold plating across the board, the additional £155 for the Seiko goes a long way.
Available 12th August with delivery in September, the Seiko Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition is limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide which seems like a lot in the grand scheme of limited edition watches. But not only is this a very affordable watch, it’s Seiko. Those 2,000 won’t hang around long.
