Seiko Release 5 Sports Field GMT Khaki Drill and Desert Sand

Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT

Seiko’s 5 Sports collection is home to their daily beater tool watches with a focus on pilot’s and field watch archetypes, alongside traditional sports watches. It’s a series all about combining accessibility and practicality to create timepieces that you’d actually be willing to take on adventures with you instead of keeping them locked in a display case. A great example of that is the new Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT in Khaki Drill and Desert Sand colours – we’ve been hands on with the Khaki Drill edition to learn more.

Field watches have their origins in the early and mid-20th century battlefields of Europe. As the scale of warfare grew, being able to execute precise manoeuvres across multiple engagements became increasingly important and so having reliable timekeeping was essential. The field watch emerged as a watch archetype focussed on two things only: reliability, readability. The reliability factor is two-fold: the watches needed to be both chronometrically reliable to avoid timing disasters and physically reliable to withstand the rigours of life out in the field and in the trenches. Readability being an important design element to avoid human error.

The 5 Sports Field GMT is inspired directly by heritage trench watch of that early period. At 39.4mm x 13.6mm in stainless steel the case is suitably robust and a 100m water resistance rating means it can weather some rain and puddles without being a dedicated dive watch. It’s fitted with a curved hardlex crystal, which is a type of treated glass that sits between normal mineral glass and sapphire. Because it’s actually a bit flexible, it’s fairly resistant to shattering or cracking under impact which is again useful in the field watch context.

I like the feel of it on the wrist and it’s an interesting decision to pair a field watch with a five-link bracelet – typically five-links are seen as a dressier option compared to solid 3-link bracelets. I could also imagine this watch looking great on a rubber or NATO option if you wanted to lean more into the utility focus or heritage military vibes respectively.

For the display, it’s uses large, lumed Arabic numerals for the primary 12-hour display with smaller numerals curling around inside to provide full 24-hour timekeeping. There are four hands on the central handstack: hours, minutes, seconds and then the second time zone GMT hand, which rotates once per 24-hours and correlates to the 24-hour bezel. A GMT complication is a natural addition to a field watch because soldiers or adventurers are often out on missions across the world, making tracking multiple time zones a useful function.

For colour, the version I have been hands-on with is called Khaki Drill, a military inspired green tone that provides a nice backdrop for the red-tipped GMT hand. The other version that is being produced is Desert Sand, which is unsurprisingly a sandy, ivory tone. They both join the black dial version of the 5 Sports Field GMT that was introduced in 2024. I think the new military colours give the watch significantly more character and appeal than the older black edition.

Inside, the watch is powered by the calibre 4R34, visible through the exhibition caseback. It’s one of Seiko’s workhorse movements with a 41-hour power reserve and an accuracy of +45 / -35 seconds per day, which is on the lower end of modern specs but comes with the trade-off of good accessibility and convenience (any service centre should be able to look after it well).

At £410, the Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT ticks all the boxes you could ask of it. An actual go anywhere, do anything watch with the added benefit of a GMT complication. In its new military-inspired colours it just makes me want to get out on a hike or adventure all the more.

Now how can I get while I am in Ethiopia.

  • I’ve always been a fan of your divers watchs, I’ve only owned one in the 1990s. Unfortunately I needed money and sold it, I’ve been sorry since! I’m trying to decide on witch model. Which ever I choose im sure ill have it for the rest of my life!!!

    • I recommend the Seiko prospex line. I have the manta ray special edition with stainless steel bracelet. It has manta rays on the dial and the dial transitions from light to dark blue. Ceramic bezel. Sapphire crystal Amazing dial. Heavy watch but it always wears lighter than iit is. You have to see one in person. Online will not show how amazing the dial is. I’ve had people want to buy it off my wrist lol. I paid $650 for it but I don’t regret it. Anyway how you find what you’re looking for.
