Tag Heuer x Fragment Team Up for New Carrera Glassbox Chronograph

Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Fragment Limited Edition

Watches and streetwear have had plenty of crossover in recent years, and I don’t just mean that most rappers rock APs. There’s Seiko’s collaboration with BAPE, Seiko’s collaboration with Rowing Blazers, Seiko’s collaboration with HUF… and some others, I’m sure. Now though it’s Tag Heuer’s turn, stepping away from the F1 for a moment to reprise a streetwear collab that has been left spinning its wheels since 2020: the new Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Fragment Limited Edition.

First, a quick primer on Fragment. The Tokyo-based label of designer Hiroshi Fujiwara is all multi-disciplinary fusing of streetwear, music, culture, the lot. But what it actually comes down to is sleek, understated minimalism. Think a monochromatic, less-is-more colour palette with pop-culture influences. It’s pretty cool stuff.

In this new edition of the Carrera, they’ve really leaned into that monochromatic minimalism and the result is pretty sexy. On the dial that means as streamlined a tricompax as you’re likely to see, with a black opaline base, thin grey (rather than high-contrast black) markers and simple typography for the words ‘Swiss’ and ‘Fragment’ at 6 o’clock. Hour markers are small squares, handset is standard Carrera fare, rhodium plated.

The twist here is the date window which seems to be taking a leaf out of Oris’ Muppets book. Most of the time it’s a standard date, but on the 1st and 11th of each month, the numerals are replaced with Fujiwara’s signature lightning bolt. It’s a cool little touch and when it’s up, really does give the Carrera a different look. Though I have to say, I wish they’d dropped the Tag Heuer logo. It busies up what is otherwise a cool, sleek dial.

The base model here is specifically the Carrera Glassbox with the crystal flowing into that magnified tachymeter scale bezel. The bezel is even more minimal than the dial, white with numerals slightly lighter grey than on the dial. It should feel eye-catching and hi-contrast, but the mix of the grey and the way that the white blends into the steel makes it surprisingly smooth and subtle. The result is a masterclass in monochrome, running from deep black to white.

Otherwise, it’s the Glassbox we know and love. The 39mm stainless steel case, the smooth TH20-00 automatic chronograph movement, it ticks every box. The bracelet too is lovely, with its central track of smaller flat links. Although one slight bugbear is that Tag Heuer call it a beads of rice bracelet and while the construction is certainly inspired by the same idea, for me it’s too flat and sharp-edged to fit the bill. It’s in the name; beads of rice have smooth, rounded inner links, this does not. It’s still great and suits the watch, just not the name. Blocks of rice maybe?

The new collab will set you back £7,300, which is a few hundred above where the standard Carrera Glassbox Chronograph sits, starting at £6,150. But I do think it’s the coolest Carrera Glassbox yet and if streetwear heft is something that matters to you, that’s likely a solid price point. It’s limited to 500 pieces, so if it’s for you, you might need to be quick. Fans of Fragment are voracious.
