Aera Introduce C-1 Chrono Reverse Panda Edition

Aera C-1 Chrono Reverse Panda

Stick with me for a moment here. Back in 2024 Aera introduced the C-1 chronograph in two editions called the C-1 Shadow and C-1 Cloud. Now, they’re releasing another version of the C-1 chronograph called the C-1 Chrono. So, while the Chrono is the only chronograph with Chrono in its name, it’s not the only chronograph in the C-1 range (it gets even sillier if you assume the C in C-1 stands for chronograph too). Personally, I think they should have stuck with the original naming convention of naming the watch after the aesthetic vibe of the piece in which case the new watch would be the C-1 Panda, or more specifically Reverse Panda.

But naming to one side, the C-1 Chrono is the sportiest rendition of the watch to date. It features that reverse panda style display with a black dial, white bi-compax chronograph subdials and red chronograph hands. It’s hyper legible, allowing you to read it at a glance even in the heat of high-octane motorsport action. It’s inspired by what Aera refer to as the “most iconic 1950s and ‘60s chronographs” but that reading between the lines we all know refers to the Rolex Daytona Paul Newman and likely the Breitling Superocean, which was the first watch to use the design.

Outside the revamped display, the C-1 Chrono is identical to the 2024 versions. It has a 42mm diameter and sits quite thick at 15.75mm but that’s part and parcel for the tall, domed sapphire glass on top of a very round case. The smooth curves also mean that it slips below a cuff surprisingly easily, if you ever wanted it to. It’s completed by a relatively large crown at 3 o’clock, flanked on either side by modern looking chronograph pushers.

Inside is the Sellita SW510 elaboré grade automatic movement with 56-hour power reserve. Putting truth to Aera’s statement of being ‘Swiss Made. British Design’. It’s one of Sellita’s higher spec movements and is protected by a solid caseback engraved with the watch’s specs. Such as its 100m (10ATM) water resistance and the fact it’s made from 904L stainless steel.

The Aera C-1 Chrono is priced at £2,200, the same as the 2024 models. I do really like this new interpretation of the design. The layout is very clean, and it almost gives German minimalist vibes like a Nomos Glashütte or a particularly bold Junghans. Though I do also think a Pink Panther edition of the C-1 would also look cool.
