The British Watchmakers’ Day that took place a few days ago was really special. A huge number of British brands all in the same space with the collectors and customers who have helped to establish them as some of the leading brands in the country and dare I say Europe. One of the highlights of the day was the special edition watches many brands brought to the show and that were exclusively available on the day, such as the Fears 1924 Edition. However, if you missed out on the Fears, worry not, because the Bristolian brand has just announced a non-exclusive variant, the Fears Brunswick 38 ‘Silver Noir’.

The long and the short of it is that this is a black lacquer dial version of the ‘1924 Edition’. It has the same 38mm sterling silver case and the same numerals inspired by an archival timepiece dating back to the 1920s. It was that archival watch that formed the basis of the Brunswick as we know it today so it’s cool to see it paid tribute to in such stylish fashion. Of course, as the Brunswick 38 ‘Silver Noir’ now sports a black dial, the numerals, railway minute track and small seconds subdial are in white to provide contrast.
Beneath the inky black, noir dial of the watch is the La Joux-Perret D100 movement. It’s a manual calibre, wound with the signature onion crown, providing a 50-hour power reserve. As the top-grade version of the D100 it’s finished with Côtes de Genève and blued screws.
Considering that the ‘1924 Edition’ was a major success at the British Watchmakers’ Day, the success of the Brunswick 38 ‘Silver Noir’ feels all but assured. It’s priced at £3,950, which is appropriate for a full silver case and high quality La Joux-Perret movement. I really like that Fears have released this watch, giving a wider audience a chance to pick up the archival inspired model without stepping on anyone’s toes who bought one at the event by keeping the white dial version exclusive.
