Nomos Glashütte Tetra isn’t everybody’s cup of tea compared to models like the incredibly popular Campus and Tangente. That’s likely because with its square case it stands out a lot more and Nomos are celebrated for their minimalist aesthetic. However, calling Nomos minimalist is actually a bit of a misnomer because they’re actually more closely engaged with the Bauhaus artistic movement. And through a Bauhaus lens the Tetra makes perfect sense, especially in the quartet of new colourways that have just been launched.

Bauhaus was a German design movement in the early 20th century that encompassed art, furniture and lifestyle elements. It had a focus on creating a cohesive artistic vision that centred around function, which is why shape language was very important. Bauhaus design centred around three core shapes: circles, squares and triangles. The Tetra, then, is the perfect expression of this with its 30mm x 30mm square case in steel and circular subdial. Arguably it’s missing a triangle but, as is the nature of squares, it can be divided into many triangular segments.

Anyway, the reason this is all relevant to the new colourways is that, since Bauhaus included furniture and interior design, Nomos have launched the watches to coincide with the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Each of the four Tetra watches, which centre around the colour pink, have an individual name.

The Fiercely Determined is pale rose with a silver subdial, The Unattainable is silver with a pink subdial, The Furious One is aubergine with a pale gold subdial and lastly The Capricious is a peachy salmon with a silver subdial. I like that while they are all centred around pink in various shades, none of them are overtly feminine. Of course, at 30mm, they’re very small watches and will suit slimmer wrists far better.

Rounding out the watch is the calibre ‘Alpha’, a manual wind piece with a 43-hour power reserve. That’s an impressive power reserve for a movement only 2.3mm thick. The last thing to say is that, based on the existing Tetras of comparative size and movement, the new quartet is priced from £1,860. For that money, I’d personally prefer a model like the Club Campus but if you love Bauhaus, the Tetra could well be for you.
