Tudor Black Bay 54 Introduces Vintage 37mm Case (Live Pics & Pricing)

Tudor Black Bay 54

Small-wristed Tudor lovers rejoice! The brand new 37mm Tudor Black Bay 54 is here. Essentially, it’s a downsized Black Bay 58, but don’t let the similarities deceive you, there are some subtle changes that make the Black Bay 54 very much its own watch.

Not only is it smaller in diameter, it also has a slimmer profile measuring 11.24 mm tall. Plus, there’s a smaller, redesigned crown and slightly more overlap on the bezel for easier use. However, it is impossible to avoid the fact that at 37mm, it does feel small, very small. Handling the watch, I thought I would like it more than I do but it feels a little toy-like. There’s no question about it being well made, but for me personally 39mm for a dive watch feels like my limit.

Aesthetically, it apparently draws inspiration from the 7992 Oyster Prince Submariner, though in all honesty it bears far more similarities to the later Oyster Submariners like the 7923. Either way, it has an undeniable vintage aesthetic in line with the Black Bay 58 that’s only enhanced by the size change.

Elsewhere, it’s business as usual for Tudor with superb quality at a great price. It utilises the same movement as it’s bigger brothers the Pelagos and the Black Bay, the in-house Manufacture Calibre MT5400 with its ‘weekend proof’ 70-hour power reserve, silicon hairspring and a tolerance range of 6 seconds (-2/+4).

Another note-worthy update is that the Black Bay 54 features the Tudor “T-fit” clasp, which was introduced on the Black Bay 58 Blue in 2020. The satin-brushed 3-link steel bracelet benefits from seven different levels of micro adjustment compared to the early Black Bay 58’s four. As well as the bracelet, it’s also available on black rubber straps in three sizes, each one form-fitted specifically for the Black Bay 54.

The Tudor Black Bay 54 37mm is priced at £3,030 with a rubber strap or £3,200 for the steel bracelet version. The only thing left to add is, I wish they’d come up with a more inventive name than the all-encompassing Black Bay.
