Throughout the existence of Panerai’s flagship diving watch, the Submersible, two case sizes have dominated. The big 42mm and the gargantuan 47mm. But what are you supposed to do if 42 feels too small for your rugged, adventuring dive watch but you also can’t wear the 47 because aren’t built like Dwayne Johnson? Well, Panerai have got you covered with a new 44mm size QuarantaQuattro Submersible subcollection, which they describe as a new cornerstone sizing.
Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro & QuarantaQuattro Bianco
Let’s kick things off with the basic version of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro. It has a stainless steel case with that all important 44mm diameter, it’s worth noting there is a pre-existing 44mm Submersible but only the one and it wasn’t called a QuarantaQuattro. The new watch features all the elements common to the Submersible range, including the cushion shape and iconic crown guard.
The dial is black with applied hour markers coated in lume. There’s also a white dial version available under the name QuarantaQuattro Bianco which looks very fresh. In terms of design, the dial has a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock, again both common to wider series. However, the date window has been slightly altered for improved legibility and will be the new standard date window design moving forward.
Inside, both watches house the P.900 automatic calibre and in fact every single watch featured in this article houses that same movement. It has a 72-hour power reserve and utilises the Incabloc anti-shock device to make it super robust despite only being 4.2mm thick.

Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Carbotech Blu Abisso
If the regular steel versions of the 44mm Submersible don’t quite do it for you, there’s a Carbotech version, which is also regarded as a basic model for the QuarantaQuattro subcollection. The case uses Panerai’s carbon fibre based material which has superior scratch and corrosion resistance to steel and is also lighter weight.
Additionally, due to the production methods involved, the carbon patterning of each case is totally unique making your watch a one of a kind. To match the aesthetic, the titanium crown has been DLC coated.
This Carbotech version also has a blue dial and matching blue strap so it you don’t like the black or Bianco there’s a third option. Although, of the three basic models the Bianco has an allure that’s hard to ignore.

Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel
Next up is a trio of Submersibles at the new 44mm case diameter. Once again, the overall design of the watch is the same as before but now at the new sizing. The signature crown guard and legible dial have all been preserved, although the dial features a pattern. However, this time all three are produced in eSteel, Panerai’s recycled and sustainable metal. eSteel is a major part in Panerai’s scheme to tackle sustainability in watchmaking following last year’s concept Submersible eLAB-ID™.
Moving on from the sustainable metal case, which by the way has has exactly the same properties as regular steel alloys, the eSteel QuarantaQuattros have a patterned dials.
All three are vertical gradients in either green, grey or blue and evoke the sense of light passing through the deeps with a polished finish. The ceramic bezel also has a polished, high gloss finish – the first time Panerai have finished ceramic like this.
The last thing to note is that, as with all the straps available for this subcollection, the materials are also recycled and sustainably sourced. The options are a rubber strap or a fabric one.

Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Limited Edition
What would a new subcollection be without a limited edition to go with it at launch? For the QuarantaQuattro that role is taken by the Luna Rossa edition, celebrating Panerai’s continuing role supporting the Luna Rossa America’s Cup team, who won the Prada Cup in the latest competition.
For this edition the case is stainless steel, obviously with a diameter of 44mm, and the dial features the key colours of Luna Rossa. That means a blue base with sunray brushed finishing and a red seconds hand, completed by white hour markers. The same colours feature on the strap. And, of course, the dial has the name Luna Rossa inscribed on it just in case it wasn’t clear.
As previously mentioned, all of the QuarantaQuattros house the P.900 calibre and the Luna Rossa edition is no different. That 72-hour power reserve and anti-shock construction are very useful onboard a boat.
